Day 1
I begin this practice at the level of speech. As I had learned in prior sadhana, this is both a challenging level at which to begin but it is also sort of a warm up round for the more demanding levels when I will look at physical action and ultimately thought. Haven't decided how long to make this first round, perhaps a year. For that period of time I will observe all of my speech and assess whether it is sinless or sinful.
A beautiful aspect of this type of sadhana, is that I have no idea how to judge the subtleties of sinlessness in speech as of yet. I'm sure I will make some errors in judgement, but another beautiful aspect of this type of sadhana is that I alone am the judge and jury. I will keep track of how many consecutive days I have maintained sinless speech and return to day one with each mistake.
As I anticipate the day ahead, there are some obvious things to avoid when speaking, eg politics, but I am curious to engage in mundane conversation and assess whether my words were helpful or unhelpful to the goal of life.
